Esquisses de la Valle Maira
Sketches of David Grech, September 2018
David is a retired architect who specialised in the care and conservation of historic buildings. His particular interest is in vernacular architecture, the traditional buildings of a region or area, and in how those buildings vary according to the geology and the building material available for their construction. In the Valle Maira he was particularly taken by the roofs of random cut stone flags, and the patterns that they generated. His sketches are all completed in the field, using waterproof ink pens and watercolour. The watercolour is applied right at the end and is used to highlight specific aspects in the sketch. Each sketch may take between 45 minutes and an hour to complete.
